Comments about the Electric Map

As one of Joseph Rosensteel’s daughters, and on behalf of my sister and three brothers, I want to thank you for starting this website. And, I want to thank everyone who has expressed fond memories of seeing the Map. We hope to find a non-profit who will continue our father’s work.

It is with deep sadness and regret that I hear that the National Park Service is planning on scrapping the Electric Map. The electric map is indeed a national treasure, that should be bound for the new visitors center, or another location in Gettysburg… not a scrap yard.

I have been a visitor to the Gettysburg Battlefield for decades, and I always make a point to go see the Electric Map on every trip. I will be very honest with you, when I was a youngster, I got more knowledge and understanding of the battle from the electric map than I did from any video or book.

I have sent emails to Mr. Latschar, Ms. Bomar, and I have sent emails to Pennsylvania US Senators Casey and Specter. Hopefully the map can be saved… whether by the NPS or an outside agency willing to care for it.

Thank you for your time and your effort in saving the Electric Map.

Dear John Latschar,

Would you PLEASE rethink the whole idea of eliminating the electric map? We visit Gettysburg at least once every year and I have to tell you that until we saw the map & followed the lighted progression from Day One to Day Three, it was hard to get one's brain wrapped around the whole battle.

The first time I saw the Map, I finally understood the FISHHOOK configuration - something neither books purchased, nor tours could do. There is something about the progression of the lights (& color coordination) that just really sinks in. And the relief style of the map shows the terrain so well.

Without the knowledge gained from viewing the Map, I doubt I would be as interested as I am, and we may not have returned so much. To know the Battle is to fall in love with Gettysburg, and that Map did it for me and mine - visitors from CT. And, believe it or not, we always bought tickets to see the map each visit as we found it that remarkable.

To say it's out of date is so unfair. Have you never heard the expression "SIMPLE IS BETTER"?

Finally, having purchased several driving tours over the years, we never got the info from them the way the Map enlightened us. (and the posted signs don't match all the driving tours either, which can be most confusing!)

My fear is that while trying to modernize the Map, the simplicity of what it did will be lost. Maybe you have been involved too much and too long to see the truth of my comments.

Best regards,
Lynn
